Socially Speaking

Socially Speaking In The Land Of Pleasant Living

Well the “social” season is hitting high gear and we at Style are here for you. Between editor, Brian Lawrence and myself there’s not a lot going on that we don’t know about.
CORRECTION
I would like to start this column with clarification on some misinformation provided from my last piece highlighting the Life and Breath Foundation’s “Flip-Flop Festivus.” Founder and President, SeHullan informed me that Raven, Mike McCrary was not the chair of the event and was not late for the VIP pre-party, as I passed him coming, as I was going, “he was right on schedule” Hull wrote.  Mr. McCrary was one of the headliners on the program along with Edwin Mulitalo, who like the other former Ravens kindly gave their time for this great cause. We regret the error.

Socially Speaking of Mr. McCrary, at a wonderful fall menu preview event, held at the Capital Grille in Baltimore, old number 99 expressed his dissatisfaction with yours truly. As his mini rant came full circle it became clear it wasn’t the above noted correction that upset him, it was that I reported his public record marital status, or lack there of AND wished both well. Helloooo??? Second generation local gossip-social columnist here buddy and to some, you’re a celebrity in these parts.

Socially Speaking…The reason for being at the Capital Grille was to sample their new menu items. Upon walking in the door, it was obvious that no one told the folks at CG that there is a recession going on, it was packed! I spotted and chatted with Ted and Nancy Herget who were enjoying a fine din-din and the big bird himself, Peter Angelos. Make it a future stop, but you better make a reservation!

SPOTTED
Local attorney, Dick Talkin was spotted lunching at Victoria Gastro Pub in Columbia after recently being featured in the “Headlines” segment of Jay Leno’s launch show according to Pub’s owner Randy Marriner. Special Socially Speaking thanks to Randy for having me for lunch and giving me the personal tour of this super cool place. Take off your Baltimore blinders and head to Howard County, 8201 Snowden River Parkway, Columbia for a true visual and dining treat. This family owned business has perfected fine cuisine and a London Pub atmosphere. Check it out http://www.victoriagastropub.com and make sure to check out the beer club, you will be impressed.

AN EVENING ON THE SEVERN
Ed St. John, CEO of St. John Properties, opened his home recently to a sell out crowd to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. This lovely event was chaired by James C. “Chip” DiPaula, Brian and Martha Gibbons, Brant and Jessica Standridge and Honorary Chair, Maryland Terps B-ball head coach- Gary Williams. Special guests included attorney extraordinaire- Julie Landau, Constantine Wines-Gus Kalaris and former First Lady Kendel Ehrlich to name a very few. A wonderful time was had by all for a cause that is so close to a cure.
FINALLY
The people in charge at Alizee boutique bistro and wine bar, 4 West University Parkway, formerly of Polo Grill locale fame have really gotten it right. Owner Richard Naing, also owner of the Inn at Colonnade provides his patrons a retail good deal. Over 300 wines are available at retail prices, and you can purchase a bottle and take it with. The wine room-boutique is right next to the front door of Alizee and is a perfect place for a wine tasting or special occasion. Another great addition is Executive Chef Christian deLutis, previously of The Wine Market and Corks.  His talent for American cuisine, with a French flair, has many talking about his exciting menu. Great Chef plus reasonable vino equals a good time, no doubt. Check it out and mention you read it here and the first cocktail is them. http://www.alizeebaltimore.com

MOTIVATOR AYKROYD

You may have heard that funny man, Dan Aykroyd was all around town recently promoting his Crystal Head Vodka. Before he made his Charm City rounds, he addressed the sales reps at Reliable Churchill Distributors and not only educated them on his product but then autographed the skull shaped bottles and shook hands with almost 200 of them. In fact, I think if the brass hadn’t cut off the session, he would have kept going and going.

TWO CHEFS GO OVER THE TOP
Chef’s Expression Catering has always been well known for edgy food. But this past week, Chefs Jerry Edwards and John Walsh, took the plunge off of the 23 story Silo Point Tower, in Locust Point literally. Why you may ask?  Chefs Expression is well known for participating in charitable endeavors and this scaling the tower downward race against each other was for the Gaudenzia Women and Children’s Center. Man you two are five star great!!!
