First Ladies Who Don’t Wear Fur

Comments

Personally, I don’t think it’s right for people to slaughter animals so they can look like the heiress of Paris. I think it’s wonderful that these women choose to look fashionable in other ways than putting a piece of an innocent animal on their shoulder.

@William:  A woman in a fleece looks good, too.  And there are so many different looks you can get from wool!

IMHO, if fur coats were made from roadkill—rock on.  But to bash something—a living, breathing creature with pleading anguished eyes—in the head so I can look “great” is more cruelty than I can stomach.

There are more ways to be beautiful—inside and out—than wearing sable.

I’ve been avoiding reading this b/c I didn’t want to see the horror. But I decided to just jump in and the video of the skinning of animals was so awful it made me cry. That poor animal (whatever it was) lying in a pile STILL ALIVE after being skinned will give me nightmares forever.

I’ve never thought buying fur is humane. So of course, this video is preaching to my already converted mind.

Would I wear vintage fur? Living in Arizona I don’t face that personal dilemma very often. I did once get naked and take my friend’s beaver coat out of her closet and roll around in it.  It was luscious (from the 40s).

I think wearing vintage fur is OK if you didn’t buy it. You don’t want to make room in someone’s closet or budget to buy a new fur by buying a used fur from them…either directly or from a vintage store.

So I would say, OK to be left one by your dear old aunt…or pick one up in a thrift store where it might have been donated, but not sold.

As far as leather, I do eat grass fed beef. And so I cannot ride the hide horse and say no leather. I can say that I take good care of my leather and make it last as long as possible and I don’t amass an Imelda Marcos-size collection of shoes.

There are no furs in my wardrobe.  No thanks.  I do have a second-hand cowhide rug in my home.  And, while I have never eaten a mink or a coyote I do enjoy steak.  Not too sure “fun fur” is cat but fake fur IMHO is akin to toy guns…oh, and turkey bacon.

Personally, I think it is fine to wear fur. A woman with a superb sable coat looks great.

When I was 17 I coveted a vintage muskrat coat I saw at an secondhand store.  I worked many hours (earning $2/hour; coat cost $99) to buy that coat.  But then one day it hit me that real live soft furry animals had died to make that coat.  I never wore it—or other fur—again.

I rationalize my leather shoes and handbags as, Well, they were killed so someone could have a steak, so I may as well get the benefit of the lovely shoes made from their hides.  These are all personal choices that each of us must make.

But I do worry that a lot of what’s passing itself off as “fake fur” is real… I think some of it is cat.  Often it just feels too real to be faux.  So I’m leaving fake fur alone as well.

Kudos to the First Ladies who look beautiful (and warm) in their non-fur wraps!
