Glamour Girl
Well, it’s a good thing Glamour Girl has low blood pressure, because between the heart-racing prompted by the Subversive Toiles yesterday and the discovery of this auction today, she is about ready for a coronary à la Roger Sterling (though not as suave, to be sure).
As I wrote last year, the cool, elegant, sophisticated fashions of Mad Men are thrilling. It’s no wonder they’ve started a style revolution in our grungy times.
Well, here’s your chance to own a little piece of that sophistication—a real piece.
The biomedical research charity City of Hope is holding a Mad Men Auction on eBay. They’re selling off items from the set, as well as three dresses from the series (yes, alas, only three, but hey, the prices are going to go through the roof anyway, so it wouldn’t matter if they were selling the whole damn wardrobe, it would all still be unaffordable).
Those with deep pockets, however, will be lucky, as long as they bid between now and Sunday, August 22nd. There’s sure to be lots of sniping going on, and if I had even a whisper of a chance at winning Joan’s green dress, I’d be at the head of the pack:

It’s just my size, but I’m sure it’ll go for thousands of dollars.
Then there’s Betty Draper’s beautiful frothy blue dress from the scene at the Stork Club:

And there’s the swanky brocade dress worn by Bobbie Barrett in one of her many seduction scenes:

Lots of furniture is on the auction block, as well as a chance for a walk-on in Season 5—and you know the price of that one’s going to be off the charts (it’s already up to almost 8,000 bucks as of this writing, with a full week left to go). **(UPDATE: Barely ten hours later, the price is up to $12,800. I’m telling ya, this one’s going to be a doozy!)
Enjoy, mes amis, and if you are lucky enough to win something—or even bid on one—do let me know.
(P.S. Don’t forget that creator Matthew Weiner is originally from Charm City, so think of it as supporting a local boy as well as a worthy cause.)
