The Annapolis Insider

Mary Ann Treger shares news and views from around town.

My latest walk up Main Street revealed a few sweet additions.

Nostalgia Cupcakes (188 Main St), the town’s newest nosh, is a little tricky to find. It’s recessed between a teak furniture store and a shop selling wind chimes but do persevere. Each day five decadent choices are offered including a Vegan variety. On any day you might find PB&J, Coconut, Nana’s Banana nut or 16 other yummy possibilities.

My first take is that the cupcakes are small for the $3 price tag. I work up the courage to share my two cents with owner Sharon White. She says, “They’re the same size as a scoop of ice cream that costs just as much. And, you have to consider our ingredients. We only use the best.”  Before I can say Mississippi Mudpie, she lists them—European Sweet Cream Butter (something called Plugra), vanilla from Madagascar, Valrhona chocolate, Vermicelli sprinkles made of real chocolate, not the tasteless things you get in jars at the grocery store.  When possible, Sharon buys local—the caramel and fudge are from Kilwin’s Ice Cream and Chocolate shop, a short walk down the block.  I eye a special order chocolate birthday cake being boxed. It would make mine a very happy one. Special order miniature cupcakes and an ultra deluxe cupcake line made with liqueurs are available, too.

But today I want a goodie without guilt.  Yofiore Yogurt (138 Main Street) is a cool place offering fat-free Green Tea, Pomegranate or Vanilla frozen yogurt. This tart, tangy treat isn’t as sweet as the frozen yogurt once sold in every strip mall in the country. Healthy is mentioned here more than once—they use no artificial flavors or colors. And, healthy toppings include fresh blackberries, strawberries, mango, kiwi and pineapple. Less healthy alternatives—from gummy bears to M&M’s—are also available. If your taste buds are shouting for something rich and creamy, Ben & Jerry’s or Annapolis Ice Cream are a short walk away.

Hey there trendy moms and grandmas. In a few weeks you’ll be able to dress your kids or grandkids in the same clothes worn by Branjolina’s clan and the bambinos of other hot stars. Cool stuff for young mom’s is the mantra at Baby Madison (158 Main St.) opening in April. Owner Catharine Incaprera, (she also owns the hip Madison women’s boutique on the other side of the street) plans to stock unique west coast lines for boys and girls in sizes from infants to 6X.  The best news is, EVERYTHING IS MADE IN AMERICA. And EVERYTHING IS ORGANIC.  Labels such as Charlie Rocket, a favorite of Anjolina; Harajuku, Gwen Stefani’s childrens line; KAOS vintage T-shirts that feature rock albums and the Kingsley boys clothing line will be displayed in a fun, cheery store.  Prices range from $18 to $70.
