Apple Fritters

My mom’s recipe from “The Woman’s Home Companion Cookbook,” published in 1955.

1 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon sugar
1 egg, beaten
1 cup milk
1 tablespoon melted butter or vegetable oil
1 pound apples, washed, cored, and sliced into rings (do not peel)

In a medium bowl, sift together flour, salt and sugar. In another bowl, beat together egg, milk and butter or oil. Stir wet ingredients into dry ingredients.

Dip apple slices into batter, letting excess drip off. Fry battered apples in hot (365-375-degree) oil until apples are nicely browned. Drain on paper towels and serve with powdered sugar. Serves 6
