Zoomerang! cancelled

Maryland Zoo in Baltimore to Cancel Annual Gala

Baltimore, MD – The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore has decided to cancel its annual gala, Zoomerang!, after 25 years. The decision was made after reviewing the costs and benefits associated with organizing and operating the event, which has seen a slight decline in sponsorships and ticket sales in the past few years.

“Zoomerang! has been a tremendous amount of fun for the Zoo and our supporters over the past 25 years,” stated Don Hutchinson, interim president and CEO.  “However, it is a very expensive event to stage and we felt that, in this economy, it was time to give Zoomerang! a rest after many wonderful years.”

The Maryland Zoo Board of Trustees and Institutional Advancement staff will continue to evaluate the idea of staging a gala in the Zoo for the future.  “We want to ascertain if there is a cost-effective way to host a gala which takes advantage of the great location we have in the Zoo, can be managed more efficiently, bring in revenue and still offer a wild night for all,” continued Hutchinson.  “If we can develop an event that hits all those marks, then we will move forward.”

The Zoo thanks all the thousands of supporters who made the event possible over the past 25 years, including the many restaurants, businesses and individuals who donated goods, services, time and dollars to Zoomerang!
