Lose weight without dieting

Go to the dogs!
Volunteering at the pound could help you lose pounds. People who signed up to walk shelter dogs for an hour a week lost about a pound in four weeks, early research from the University of Missouri at Columbia showed. That’s 12 pounds a year you could shed without skipping a single dessert! In fact, other research by study author Rebecca Johnson, Ph.D., revealed that people who walked a dog (either their own or a loaner hound) 20 minutes a day for five days a week lost on average 14 pounds after a year. Best of all, dog walking turns out to be an easy commitment to keep. “We had a 72 percent adherence rate, which is unheard of in most exercise programs,” Johnson says. “Some volunteers enjoyed it so much, they stayed longer to walk more animals.” Find a shelter near you at PetFinder.com.

Zoomerang! cancelled

Maryland Zoo in Baltimore to Cancel Annual Gala

Baltimore, MD – The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore has decided to cancel its annual gala, Zoomerang!, after 25 years. The decision was made after reviewing the costs and benefits associated with organizing and operating the event, which has seen a slight decline in sponsorships and ticket sales in the past few years.

“Zoomerang! has been a tremendous amount of fun for the Zoo and our supporters over the past 25 years,” stated Don Hutchinson, interim president and CEO.  “However, it is a very expensive event to stage and we felt that, in this economy, it was time to give Zoomerang! a rest after many wonderful years.”

The Maryland Zoo Board of Trustees and Institutional Advancement staff will continue to evaluate the idea of staging a gala in the Zoo for the future.  “We want to ascertain if there is a cost-effective way to host a gala which takes advantage of the great location we have in the Zoo, can be managed more efficiently, bring in revenue and still offer a wild night for all,” continued Hutchinson.  “If we can develop an event that hits all those marks, then we will move forward.”

The Zoo thanks all the thousands of supporters who made the event possible over the past 25 years, including the many restaurants, businesses and individuals who donated goods, services, time and dollars to Zoomerang!

Good Dog Smell Test

A colleague gave me a new product to try today from Hillhouse Naturals: Good Dog odor neutralizing diffuser.  Immediately, I loved the fact that Hillhouse Naturals is an environmentally conscious company and the packaging was printed with 100% wind power. And with a couple of key tag lines like “100% Natural Tail Waging Good” and “Experience the calming scent of lavender, amber and vanilla,” I thought I’d give it a go.

Of course with two dogs, a cat and a husband, I’m sure my home could use an odor neutralizing diffuser—although most pet owners become immune to the pet smells of their own home.  My mother is usually my pet smell-tester; each time she visits, I ask “does the house smell like dogs?”  I will always picture her face as a kid when she’d say, “That house smells like dog,” with a curled upper lip which spoke volumes of its own.  She and my dad happen to be coming in for a visit in two weeks so the new diffuser arrived at just the right time to do its job.

Since the combination of lavender, amber and vanilla smell great to me, I decided to do the smell-test on the dogs and my husband. Interesting response from the dogs: Ryder, the 12 year old was okay with it; however, Tahoe, the blind 13.5 year old, well, not so much - it sent him walking in circles trying to get out of my home office as fast as he could.  Oh, well.  If it makes my Mom happy, then I don’t have to worry about people leaving my house with that curled upper lip.

Nap Time

An older, tired-looking dog wandered into my yard; I could tell from his collar and well-fed belly that he had a home and was well taken care of.
He calmly came over to me, I gave him a few pats on his head; he then followed me into my house, slowly walked down the hall,
curled up in the corner and fell asleep.

An hour later, he went to the door, and I let him out.
The next day he was back, greeted me in my yard, walked inside and resumed his spot in the hall and again slept for about an hour.
This continued off and on for several weeks.
Curious I pinned a note to his collar: ‘I would like to find out who the owner of this wonderful sweet dog is and ask if you are aware
that almost every afternoon your dog comes to my house for a nap.’

The next day he arrived for his nap, with a different note pinned to his collar: ‘He lives in a home with 6 children, 2 under the age of 3 -
he’s trying to catch up on his sleep. Can I come with him tomorrow?’
